What kind of computer
and Internet access do I need to take an on-line (Internet) class?
For students using a personal computer, it is recommended that for optimum performance,
the computer be a Pentium III 500 MHz processor or higher with128 MB or more
of RAM. It is also recommended that students have a 16-bit sound card and speakers,
a 65,000-color video display card, an operating system of Windows 95, Windows
98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 or Windows XP. The computer should have Internet
Explorer 5.5 or later.
Using a computer that exceeds these specifications will provide you with better speed of access.
It will also be necessary to have an on-line service that provides Internet access and e-mail. For optimal viewing of video streams, we recommend using a cable modem, DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), ADSL, or satellite. These services may be purchased from a local telephone company or cable company and are all considered high speed acess.
Can I use my MAC
for nursing classes?
We do not recommend using a MAC for course work nor do we support MAC computers.
You can send and receive e-mail with your instructor and watch the audio/video
streams from some of the courses. But, because USI is mostly an IBM compatible
campus all of our instructors use IBM compatible computers. This makes e-mailing
your assessments or exchanging any files very hard. Also some software we use
is not MAC compatible.
My instructor
cannot open and read my e-mail attachments.
Many home computers are loaded with Works software and not Microsoft Office
Suite which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Special care must be
taken with a Works document so that others may open and read it.
The procedure is as follows: If your version of Works is not the newest available,
save your document as a Version 3 document. If you are working from Works 2000,
save your document as a Word document.

How do I obtain
the Orientation to On-line Courses CD?
The Orientation to On-line Courses CD is intended to help you get started with
your on-line learning experiences in the School of Nursing and Health Professions.
It contains helpful information about the type of technology you will need to
access your course materials. We also provide some software programs that you
can easily download to your home computer. A CD is mailed to you upon acceptance
to a program, or you may get one from the LRC or the Distance Education Administrative
