Personal
Colleen Walsh came to USI 9 years as a faculty member in the College of Nursing
and Health Professions. She came with a great deal of clinical and teaching
experience, and she is teaching in the graduate nursing program and also teaches
the Anticoagulation Therapy Management Certificate Program and the Lipid Management
Therapy Certificate Program.
Colleen received a diploma in nursing from Massachusetts General Hospital in
Boston, her BSN from Regents College, Albany, New York, a master’s degree
in adult health/clinical nurse specialist from the University of South Alabama
in Mobile, and a post-masters certificate as an acute care nurse practitioner
from the University of South Alabama.
She has extensive experience in orthopaedic and trauma nursing and is a certified
orthopaedic nurse, clinical specialist, and is certified as an acute care nurse
practitioner. She has worked in various regions of the country, and most recently
worked at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where she was
on the graduate faculty teaching in the adult nurse practitioner program.
Colleen has been actively involved in the design and implementation of the new
Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program at USI. Colleen is currently the course
coordinator for the second and third acute care nurse practitioner clinical
courses, and has implemented a variety of technologies to deliver course information
from a distance site.
Colleen currently is a member of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses
National Speaker's Bureau and teaches orthopaedic certification review courses
all over the country. She is also a faculty member for Barkley and Associates
Certification Review Company and teaches components of the acute care nurse
practitioner certification examination preparation course. Colleen is also a
sought after orthopaedic legal nurse consultant specializing in standards of
care for orthopedic and trauma patients as well as advanced practice nurses.
Colleen also has been active in the certificate programs that are taught over
the internet, and will continue to teach in the anticoagulation management course
as well as the lipid management course. Colleen attends several anticoagulation
and lipid management meetings per year to stay current in the national guidelines
for the care and treatment of people with these needs.
Colleen lives in Wayland, Massachusetts with her husband Rob, a cardiothoracic
and vascular surgeon who is the Medical Director of Endovascular Services at
Boston Scientific Corporation, and their three children, Sean, 22, who is a
recent graduate of Notre Dame and is pursuing a PhD in nanochemistry at Rice
University in Houston, Texas, Bridget, 19 and a sophomore at the University
of Louisville and vice president of the Kappa Delta Sorority, and Erin, 15,
a freshman at Wayland High School. In her free time, Colleen likes to read,
garden, and make pine cone wreaths.
Colleen has donated her time and talents to the Owensboro Free Clinic where
she worked several times a month as a nurse practitioner, and she most recently
worked as an acute care nurse practitioner in the Emergency Room Clinic at Jenkins
Community Hospital in Jenkins, Kentucky. She is looking for practice opportunities
in Boston.
