Selected Inpatient Services at Evansville's Acute Care Hospitals
1997-1999

Information and education are key components in any improvement process. This report is designed to educate the community on the current state of health care in Vanderburgh County and to identify preventative measures that will increase personal and community wellness. This report is brought to the community by the Partnership for Health Care Information.

The content of this report includes information regarding the rate of hospitalization for, severity of, and mortality of five categories of hospital data from 1997-99.  Cardiac services, orthopedics, pulmonary services, stroke, and women’s health are included in this report. These particular procedures and diseases were chosen because of the high volume of these diagnoses and procedures as well as their significant cost.

Within these groupings, particular diseases and procedures were selected and include:

• Cardiac Services
  first operative cardiac bypass with cardiac catheterization;
  first operative cardiac bypass without cardiac catheterization;
  angioplasty without heart attack;
  circulatory disorders with heart attack;
  cardiac catheterization;
  heart failure;
  chest pain;
• Orthopedics
  joint replacement
  back/neck surgery
  back treatment
  knee surgery
• Pulmonary Services
  asthma/bronchiolitis
  chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  simple pneumonia
• Stroke
• Women’s Health
  Cesarean section
  vaginal birth after Cesarean.

The Partnership for Health Care Information is composed of: the Tri-State Business Group on Health, Deaconess Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center, the Tri-State Business Group on Health and the University of Southern Indiana College of Nursing and Health Professions. The Partnership has released several other reports including community-wide procedure rates, hospital-specific mortality rates, and a competitive charge analysis, group of providers, and businesses that work together to provide the community with meaningful information regarding health and health care services in the Evansville community.

The purpose of the reports released by the Partnership for Health are to:

• provide health care information to the Evansville community;
• identify opportunities for improvement of health and health care in our community;
• inform individuals of their personal responsibility for lifestyle choices impacting their health and the overall health of the community;
• to provide a comparative basis for establishing community health care goals;
• to equip health care providers such as hospitals, outpatient centers, and physicians with a starting point from which they can measure the improvement of  the community’s health status; and
• to create the awareness and discussion among health care professionals, insurers, business leaders, and the population at large of preventative measures, optimum medical interventions, and continuous quality improvement.
