Infant Mortality Rate in 1996
(number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births)

In 1996, the infant mortality rate for the nation continued its almost 30-year decline, dropping from 7.6 infant deaths for every 1000 births in 1995 to 7.3 deaths per 1000 births in 1996. Similar declines in infant mortality occurred among both Whites and Blacks. However, infants born to Black mothers are still over twice as likely to die in their first year of birth than infants born to White mothers.
