   Fetal Death  -  Death prior to birth occurring at or after 20
weeks gestation (Indiana).

   Infant Mortality  -  The infant mortality rate is the number of
deaths of infants greater than 20 weeks gestation and under
one year of age per 1,000 live births in a given population.

   Infant Mortality Rate  =  Deaths of infants (under 1 year) /
live births x 1,000.

Example:  Infant mortality rate forall races  =
(38,351 / 4,158,212) x 1,000  =  9.2 deaths per 1,000 live births

   Live Birth  -  Infant born with any sign of life i.e. respiration,
heartbeat, pulsating umbilical cord.

   Low Birthweight  -  Infant born weighing less than 2,500 grams
(5.5 pounds).

   Neonatal Mortality  -  Death of a liveborn infant before the
infant becomes 28 days old.

   Preterm  -  A birth that occurs before 37 weeks gestation.

   SIDS  -  (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) The unexpected and
unexplained death of an apparently well infant.

   Very Low Birth Weight  -  Infant born weighing less than
1,500 grams (3.3 pounds).
