    What is FIMR?

    FIMR is a review process which includes data collection about fetal and infant mortality from a variety of sources.

    FIMR is a system that allows us to comprehensively examine existing problems which affect mortality in our region.

    Definitions

    Fetal Death-death prior to birth occurring at or after 20 weeks gestation (Indiana).

    Infant Mortality-the infant mortality rate is the number of deaths of infants greater that 20 weeks gestation and under one year of age per 1000 live births in a given population.

    Infant Mortality Rate- deaths of infants (under 1 year)/live births x 1000

    Live Birth- infant born with any sign of life ie. respiration, heartbeat, pulsating umbilical cord Neonatal Mortality- death of a liveborn infant before the infant becomes 28 days old

    SIDS- the unexpected and unexplained death of an apparently well infant



    Why FIMR?

    In 1996, the national infant mortality (IM) rate was 7.3

     

    In 1996, the infant mortality rate for Vanderburgh County was 10.7

     

    In 1996, Indiana was ranked 43rd for infant death

     



    Trends

    History has shown previous fluctuations in the IM rate.

    The IM rate in 1997 in Vanderburgh County was 8.3
