Dr. Martin Reed, Associate Professor of Radiologic and Imaging Sciences, Tony Schmitt, RRT, Assistant Professor of Respiratory Therapy, and Kathy Phillips RN, Clinical Laboratory and Simulation Coordinator, have been exploring the benefits of multi-program collaboration in USI's College of Nursing and Health Professions (CNHP) Clinical Simulation Activities.

Clinical simulations at USI typically involve CNHP's Clinical Simulation Center (CSC) and its Human Patient Simulators (HPS) as a training venue that includes a collaboration of students who provide care to the "patient"and other students who act as "family members".

The simulator operator provides the voice of Sim-man and patient controls. Specific interactions such as manipulating vital signs occur as a result of the students’ interaction or lack of action with the simulator.

As one clinical instructor remains with the active group, the other instructor with the rest of the class observes the simulation via video and audio from a remote classroom.

After the simulation is over, each instructor and his class debrief in separate classrooms, and then debrief as one large group.

Multi-program simulations provide the added realism of coordination, collaboration, prioritization and leadership among the different healthcare team members.

The goal is to better provide the realistic interaction in a safe and controlled environment.

Tony Schmitt states, “My students are in their first semester of the first year and have had nine weeks of lab, lecture and practice. I am always amazed at the rapid advancement and positive learning environment and outcomes that are achieved, and the student celebrates that success.”
