The Indiana State Board of Dentistry has recently added the application of medicaments for the control or prevention of dental caries as a permitted function delegable by a licensed dentist to a trained dental assistant. This course will provide the didactic and laboratory instruction required for certification as established by the Indiana State Board of Dentistry.

Course Requirement

To participate in this course, the student must be a graduate of a dental assisting program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association or a dental assistant with one (1) or more years of experience in dental assisting.

How the course works

At the time of registration, participants will receive instructions for accessing the University of Southern Indiana Blackboard system. All lecture instruction will be completed online and will be accessible 24 hours a day. There are six online lectures with corresponding quizzes and a comprehensive final exam that must be completed online prior to the scheduled laboratory date.

Laboratory sessions will include two (2) hours of practice on a mannequin and two (2) live patients (fellow participants). Participants will receive hands-on instruction in the application of topical fluorides.

Upon completion of the didactic and laboratory requirements, each participant must demonstrate clinical competency on a minimum of five (5) patients under the direct observation of a licensed dentist or dental hygienist. A form will be provided to each participant on which the observing licensed dentist or dental hygienist will documents certification of competency and completion of required clinical cases. The form must be signed by the certifier and submitted to the University of Southern Dental Assisting Program. Upon receipt of the signed form, USI will issue a certificate of completion that must be publicly displayed in the dental office where the dental assistant practices. Once the certificate of completion is received, participants will be able to legally apply medicaments (fluoride) for the control or prevention of dental caries under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist.

Computer Requirements and Suggestions

If using a personal computer, it is recommended that the computer have Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, or Mac OS X. For compatibility, you will want to have access to Microsoft Office 2010, Office 2007, or Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, or Office 2008 for Mac. In some cases, Office Live may be sufficient. For some course content, you may also need Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player and/or Windows Media Player (Flip4Mac WMV Components for QuickTime). Additionally, a broadband Internet connection would be very beneficial; AOL is not recommended. Lastly, if your course uses the Blackboard e-Learning platform, you may wish to verify that you have a compatible web browser.

If your computer is more than 6 years old or does not meet the requirements for running one the above versions of Microsoft Office (Windows system requirements / Mac system requirements), you may want to consider purchasing a new computer.
