Welcome to the Anticoagulation Therapy Management Certification Program
offered by the University of Southern Indiana through an unrestricted educational
grant from DuPont Pharma. The ever-changing field of health care continually
affords new opportunities for clinical practice, expanding to include inpatient
and outpatient client management, particularly with antithrombotic therapy.
Anticoagulation management has become a cardinal area of concern for health
providers as they seek to improve anticoagulant control and create solutions
to therapeutic problems associated with this therapy. The potential benefits
of an anticoagulant therapy management service include the following: decreased
number of hospitalizations or utilization of health care resources due to anticoagulant
related complications, higher percentage of patients maintained within therapeutic
range as compared with patients not followed in a clinic, improved patient education
and compliance with therapy, and cost effectiveness of care.
The purpose of this continuing education program is to provide an opportunity for physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other healthcare professionals to increase their knowledge and expertise in managing patients receiving anticoagulation therapy. At the conclusion of the program the participant will be able to:
1. Describe the physiology and pathophysiology of the coagulation system.
2. Discuss the clinical assessment and laboratory monitoring of the patient
receiving anticoagulant therapy.
3. Discuss the indications, dosing, adverse effects, and monitoring of antithrombotic
agents.
4. Formulate effective teaching plans for the patient receiving anticoagulant
therapy.
Describe the administrative/operational components important in providing a quality anticoagulation service.
Successful completion of this program does not indicate expertise in the field of anticoagulation. Clinical experience, demonstrated positive patient outcomes and good clinical judgement coupled with the core content of an anticoagulation course ,such as this USI Anticoagulation Management Course, is necessary to attain competency in the field of anticoagulation management.

For delivery of course content, the Anticoagulant Therapy Management Certificate Program utilizes the textbook “Managing Oral Anticoagulation Therapy: Clinical and Operational Guidelines” edited by Jack Ansell MD, Lynn Oertell, MS, RN, C-ANP, and Ann Wittkowsy, PharmD. In addition to the textbook, the program utilizes instructor assignments, web resources, and instructor feedback to augment the teaching process. This instruction method provides you with flexibility in completing assignments and in corresponding with instructors. The program spans a six week period after which students will complete a comprehensive examination.
The Certified Anticoagulation Provider Certification Working Group’s Domains and Objectives provides the theoretical framework for the program. Course content for the Anticoagulant Therapy Management Certificate Program consists of five modules divided into several units that focus on principles of care for the anticoagulant patient. The program includes the following modules and units:
