The minor in nutrition is designed to complement majors in health sciences, physical education and other health-related fields. However, this minor is open to majors in any area and may prove valuable for a prospective or current employer.  The curricula provides students with concentrated knowledge about the specialized area of nutrition.

Courses required in Nutrition Minor (Minimum 18 hours):

Biology or Chemistry - 3 or 4 hours 

NUTR 376: Principles and Applications in Nutrition—3 Hours
Principles and Applications in Nutrition emphasizes the relationships among the nutrients and how homeostasis relationships are maintained in the healthy person. Likewise, imbalances and dietary counseling for their corrections will be emphasized. Special attention to nutrition for the developing human and lectures focusing on nutrition counseling will address the needs of the health professionals seeking concepts in applied nutrition. Prerequisite: Math 100 and Chem 107 recommended.

NUTR 378: Nutrition for Sport and Fitness—3 hours
An overview of the relationship of basic nutrition and energetics to physical activity and body composition. Examines popular myths and misconceptions associated with nutrition and performance. Incorporates introduction to applied biochemistry. Prerequisite: Nutr 376 recommended.

NUTR 396: Nutrition Through the Lifecycle—3 hours
This course identifies and analyzes the special nutritional requirements for all ages of the lifecycle including pregnancy and lactation. The course will be of interest to health care professionals and individuals committed to understanding the role of nutrition in achieving optimal health. Prerequisite: Nutr 376 recommended.

NUTR 415: Dietary Supplements and Herb Use in Nutrition—3 hours 
There is a lack of understanding and many myths related to the use of nutritional supplements and herbs. This course identifies and describes the use of nutritional supplements and herbs in illness and health. The course will provide a research base for better decision-making regarding the use of nutritional supplements and herbs. Prerequisite: Nutr. 376 recommended.

NUTR 465: Community Nutrition—3 hours 
Understanding the community-based nutrition programs will provide an important referral knowledge base for health care professionals and other students. Student advocacy and political action will be enhanced through this course. Prerequisite: Nutr 376 recommended.
