Robin Balczo
University of Southern Indiana Dental Hygiene Program

Hey there! My name is Robin Balczo, and I am a senior in the Dental Hygiene Program here at USI. My experience in the USI Dental Hygiene Program has been exciting and a great learning experience. Although I was anxious about beginning the program, the DentRobin Balczoal Hygiene and Assisting Professors welcomed my class and I with enthusiasm and great knowledge. The Dental Hygiene Program at USI encompasses both textbook and clinical experience as an educational guiding tool. The Dental Clinic has 12 units in which the Dental Hygiene students practice, which is outstanding for both the students USI, and the larger community.

Many people have asked why I chose a career in dental hygiene. Dental hygiene is a health care profession that will always be in vast need. Keeping your mouth healthy is a vital part of healthy living. The Dental Hygiene Program has broadened my knowledge about proper dental care, and I can reinforce with my clients that there is much more to it than simply brushing and flossing every day.

The Dental Hygiene Program at USI is an excellent program. The professors are willing to go above and beyond for each student to understand and succeed. I have really gotten to know the professors who always welcome their students. I have also built many sound friendships with the Hygiene students. The Dental Hygiene Program accepts up to 24 students per year. Although the stress of pre-req courses and the anticipation of being accepted may be overwhelming, the reward is definitely worth while. I will be practical and say that money is always an issue with college students. However, the Dental Hygiene Program gives out several scholarships and grants to students each year.

The Dental Hygiene Program is great for any person aspiring to help others. Learning articulation, organization, attention to fine detail, and better social skills are just a few of the rewards I have received from the Program thus far. Both the educational material and clinical experience have sparked my interest tocontinue my education in the dental field. This program has taught me valuable lessons which I will take with me to help others learn about oral health care and its importance in everyday life.
