Admission to the Respiratory Therapy Program

All applicants must apply and be accepted to the University of Southern Indiana as well as make a second and separate application to the Respiratory Therapy Program. Applications to USI are available by writing or telephoning the Admissions Office at USI or through high school guidance counselors. Freshmen applying to the University of Southern Indiana are required to take either the American College Test (ACT) or the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

The completed application must be submitted to the program by April 1 of the year you wish to enter the program.

A complete set of high school and university transcripts should accompany the application.

Students meeting academic requirements must also be in good health, capable of fulfilling clinical practice requirements, and eligible for respiratory therapy credentialing.

Admission prerequisites include the following:

• Applicants must have a high school or college grade point average of 2.5 or above based on a 4.0 scale to be considered for admission.

 
• High school applicants should rank in the upper 1/3 of their graduating class.

 
• Applicants should take an appropriate entrance exam. Composite scores of 900 on the SAT or 20 on the ACT are desired.

 
• To be admitted, the applicant must be a high school graduate, or be certified for graduation before the University fall semester begins in August.

 
• Prospective applicants in high school should be in the college preparatory lane. It is very helpful if the student will take algebra, physics, chemistry, and biology while in high school. Any available advanced courses in these areas should also be taken.

 
• Applicants must draft and submit a letter explaining their reason for selecting respiratory therapy as a career. This letter should be submitted with the application.

 
• Applicants who have met minimum standards and who have all required documents submitted by the April 1 deadline will be scheduled for an interview with the USI Respiratory Therapy Admissions Committee. All interviews are confidential.
